    Evolution of the magnetic phase transition in MnO confined to channel type matrices. Neutron diffraction study

    Neutron diffraction studies of antiferromagnetic MnO confined to MCM-41 type matrices with channel diameters 24-87 A demonstrate a continuous magnetic phase transition in contrast to a discontinuous first order transition in the bulk. The character of the magnetic transition transforms with decreasing channel diameter, showing the decreasing critical exponent and transition temperature, however the latter turns out to be above the N\'eel temperature for the bulk. This enhancement is explained within the framework of Landau theory taking into consideration the ternary interaction of the magnetic and associated structural order parameters.Comment: 6 pages pdf file, including 4 figures, uses revtex4.cl

    Green Health Partnerships in Scotland; Pathways for Social Prescribing and Physical Activity Referral

    Increased exposure to green space has many health benefits. Scottish Green Health Partnerships (GHPs) have established green health referral pathways to enable community-based interventions to contribute to primary prevention and the maintenance of health for those with established disease. This qualitative study included focus groups and semi-structured telephone interviews with a range of professionals involved in strategic planning for and the development and provision of green health interventions (n = 55). We explored views about establishing GHPs. GHPs worked well, and green health was a good strategic fit with public health priorities. Interventions required embedding into core planning for health, local authority, social care and the third sector to ensure integration into non-medical prescribing models. There were concerns about sustainability and speed of change required for integration due to limited funding. Referral pathways were in the early development stages and intervention provision varied. Participants recognised challenges in addressing equity, developing green health messaging, volunteering capacity and providing evidence of success. Green health interventions have potential to integrate successfully with social prescribing and physical activity referral. Participants recommended GHPs engage political and health champions, embed green health in strategic planning, target mental health, develop simple, positively framed messaging, provide volunteer support and implement robust routine data collection to allow future examination of success

    Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) represent a paradigm shift in the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) with major practice guidelines around the world recommending NOACs over vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants for initial treatment of AF for stroke prevention. Here we describe the evidence collated and the process followed for the successful inclusion of NOACs into the 21st WHO Model List of Essential Medicines (EML). Individual NOACs have been reported to be non-inferior or superior to warfarin in preventing stroke and systemic embolism in eligible AF patients with a reduction in the risk of stroke and systemic embolism and a lower risk of major bleeding in patients with non-valvular AF compared with warfarin in both RCTs and real-world data. The successful inclusion of NOACs in the WHO EML is an important step forward in the global fight against cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of disease is high and limited access to diagnosis and treatment translates into a higher burden of morbidity, mortality, and economic costs

    What do spontaneous coronary artery dissection survivors want to support their recovery? A qualitative study

    Aims: Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) is increasingly recognised as an important cause of myocardial infarction predominantly affecting women aged under 50 years. There is limited research addressing female and male SCAD survivorsā€™ experience of, or requirements for, support post-SCAD. This study explored what SCAD survivors wanted to support recovery. Methods and Results: A qualitative study using semi-structured video and telephone interviews. Data were analysed through thematic analysis using the framework approach. We interviewed 20 participants (19 females) with a mean age of 54.6 (+/-SD 8.5 years). Three overarching themes encapsulated participantsā€™ views about support requirements. 1) Education and information. Participants thought healthcare professionals involved in diagnosis and supporting recovery required greater awareness of SCAD and the psychological effect of SCAD. They wanted accessible SCAD information immediately post-event and during the educational component of cardiac rehabilitation. 2) Physical Activity. Requirements were for advice tailored to individualsā€™ specific needs, physical capabilities, and physical activity preferences. Participants suggested that utilising wearable technology was helpful to encourage a safe return to activity. 3) Psychosocial Support. Participants wanted formal psychosocial support immediately post-event, during cardiac rehabilitation and in the longer term. Conclusion: Better healthcare professional training may improve diagnosis and increase support and awareness of SCAD. SCAD support programmes should provide early SCAD specific education utilising online sources, individually tailor physical activity prescription, offer wearable technology to support a return to being active, and provide short- and longer-term psychosocial support. As SCAD is predominately a female condition, programmes should consider female physical activity preferences

    Pre-K-Edge Structure on Anomalous X-Ray Scattering in LaMnO3

    We study the pre-K-edge structure of the resonant X-ray scattering for forbidden reflections (anomalous scattering) in LaMnO3, using the band calculation based on the local density approximation. We find a two-peak structure with an intensity approximately 1/100 of that of the main peak. This originates from a mixing of 4p states of Mn to 3d states of neighboring Mn sites. The effect is enhanced by an interference with the tail of the main peak. The effect of the quadrupole transition is found to be one order of magnitude smaller than that of the dipole transition, modifying slightly the azimuthal-angle dependence.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to J.     Direct Imaging of Graphene Edges: Atomic Structure and Electronic Scattering

    We report an atomically-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigation of the edges of graphene grains synthesized on Cu foils by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Most of the edges are macroscopically parallel to the zigzag directions of graphene lattice. These edges have microscopic roughness that is found to also follow zigzag directions at atomic scale, displaying many ~120 degree turns. A prominent standing wave pattern with periodicity ~3a/4 (a being the graphene lattice constant) is observed near a rare-occurring armchair-oriented edge. Observed features of this wave pattern are consistent with the electronic intervalley backscattering predicted to occur at armchair edges but not at zigzag edges

    Resonant X-Ray Magnetic Scattering from CoO

    We analyze the recent experiment [W. Neubeck {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \vol(60,1999,R9912)] for the resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (RXMS) around the K edge of Co in the antiferromagnet CoO. We propose a mechanism of the RXMS to make the 4p4p states couple to the magnetic order: the intraatomic exchange interaction between the 4p4p and the 3d3d states and the pp-dd mixing to the 3d3d states of neighboring Co atoms. These couplings induce the orbital moment in the 4p4p states and make the scattering tensor antisymmetric. Using a cluster model, we demonstrate that this modification gives rise to a large RXMS intensity in the dipole process, in good agreement with the experiment. We also find that the pre-edge peak is generated by the transition to the 3d3d states in the quadrupole process, with negligible contribution of the dipole process. We also discuss the azimuthal angle dependence of the intensity.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

    Unquenched large orbital magnetic moment in NiO

    Magnetic properties of NiO are investigated by incorporating the spin-orbit interaction in the LSDA+U scheme. It is found that the large part of orbital moment remains unquenched in NiO. The orbital moment contributes about mu_L = 0.29 mu_B to the total magnetic moment of M = 1.93 mu_B, as leads to the orbital-to-spin angular momentum ratio of L/S = 0.36. The theoretical values are in good agreement with recent magnetic X-ray scattering measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
